What is a Marine Survey?
Marine surveys are to the marine industry what building inspections and home inspections are to the commerical and real estate industry. A marine survey is an independent inspection of a vessel and its equipment, based on a careful visual inspection of the accessible areas of the vessel and its structures as well as available equipment.
The survey typically has three stages:
- Inspection of hull, deck, engines & other equipment and systems
- Haulout for bottom and running gear inspection
- Sea Trial
The findings, conclusions, and recommendations are then presented in a written report so that you, your insurance company, and/or financier can make an informed decision regarding the vessel.
Why do I need a Survey?
When you are buying a home you get a survey to provide you with peace of mind that the property is not about to fall in, contains all the features advertised, and is worth at least what you are paying for it.
This peace of mind is just as important when buying a boat. It may have been advertised as being built to the highest standards, but was it? How has age affected it? It may appear to be a once in a lifetime deal but is it really worth the money being asked?
A survey provides you the insight that you need to make an informed decision. The survey report highlights areas where immediate attention is needed and recommends future maintenance or upgrades. The report may also convince you that the boat is not for you and save you time and money.
Surveys are not always for pre purchase. You may wish to have a boat surveyed as it reaches an age where repairs may be required or following damage. Likewise, a professional opinion of the vessel's current value may be needed to keep your insurance policy up to date or to settle a financing dispute.
